I think most new thermostats have what is essentially an air release (jiggle valve). I have a truck with a leaky overflow and when air gets trapped the thermostat won't heat properly and the truck gets very hot then when the thermostat opens it cools rapidly. I think if the radiator is well above thermostat like a power wagon once air is out no problem my newer truck the radiator is even with thermostat and of course no overflow.
