I make a lot of my own specialty fasteners and as others have said, you have some options. Once you find the correct tap it's pretty straight forward.

I myself would get some bar stock, gun drill a ways in a lathe and tap as deep as possible. From there you can get as perfect or "close enough" to taste. I grind most everything I do as I don't have a mill.

I'd dress the radius in the wheel and spin that on the edge. A CNC could do the OD and radii in the same pass. Multi tool could do the slot and cut off as well. Once again, all the easy options cost money as far as set up and labor. The do it yourself is slow but little cost if you have the tools.

I bought/stole my surface grinder for less than $400.00. Outfitted it like the production one I run at work. Trouble is now my spindle motor went out and it costs around $1500 to get it rebuilt. Open face motor isn't worth it so I'm searching for a replacement. Everything costs and that's what a lot of people don't see. Stuff wears out and your left paying for it.

You might check with Eric B. He had some connections and was dabbling in the small production run stuff. Kevin
