What is the junction in between the head output and the top of the radiator? The thing with the screw cap on it?
Still convinced the tiny hole is for air escape. My old dozer had an air bleed thumb valve that would have to be bled everytime we put water in it. It had a rather unconventional thermostat that included a bellows and air expansion to move the valve open.
