I found on mine, no choke and four or five pumps on the gas, then adjust choke after it starts. In extreme cold, choke on start-up helps. I found that's it real easy to flood these engines....and 'yes', my carb is fine...doesn't run rich...and responds to idle adjustment. Just seems to start better, most times, without choke.

Back in the era prior to fuel injection and electronic timing, engines were 'quirky'. What worked well with one didn't necessarily work well on another.
