I sent my gas tank filler neck to be zinc blasted. They bake the paint off before they blast the items. After that, I had to gas weld a small patch on the bottom of the s-curve of the large-mouth fill neck near where it attaches to the coupling hose. After cleaning up the weld with a wire brush, I proceeded to paint the neck. There was this large glob of stuff on the side of the large portion of the fill tube. I was in a rush, so after I painted, I probed the glob and bam!- SOLDER! It seems that the large filler necks are made up of three pieces- the large portion where the filter pipe and cap goes, the curve portion that goes between it and the tank, and a connector piece that holds the two together. These are tack- welded together and then soldered. It's something I didn't know and I thought it might help somebody who needs to clean up or weld their filler neck.
