If it starts, runs for a moment, and then dies, I don't see how it can be an internal engine problem. If the valves are bent or it has jumped time that's not going to fix itself for a moment just as you start it up. In the old days, this would happen due to something like a burned out ballast resistor and a ford-type starter relay. While cranking, the relay bypasses the resistor, allowing it to fire, but then when the relay opens, the circuit has to go through the resistor which is burned out and it dies. A variation of that was a system with no ballast resistor bypass but a weak battery, where it would fire the moment you let off the starter, but not while cranking.

It seems to me any engine damage that would allow it to start and then die would allow it to start and keep running badly. If it's only firing on 4 cylinders, it should still run somewhat. Of course with all the computer crap and sensors these days, I have no idea what sort of thought process it goes through when it detects an internal engine problem. Maybe it's programmed to either run perfectly or not at all. Maybe it cuts the fuel solenoid if the exhaust is too rich or something like that.
