I believe the reasoning is that the hole lets any air out of the system, not that the hole helps prevent overheating. Obviously if the goal was to prevent overheating, a bigger hole would be better than a small one, and no thermostat at all would be best of all (which is a lot of people's foolish response to an overheating problem). I've got think that the original design was just fine. That motor was used on lots of different kinds of vehicles in every sort of climate in the world. Sometimes guys come up with "solutions" for problems that don't exist, or they redesign something that would be working just great if some other thing hadn't gone wrong. In my book, trying to work some magic into the thermostat in order to deal with an overheating problem is on the same level as turning up the idle speed screw to fix a stalling problem.
