I tracked down a pump rebuilder who was very knowledgeable and helpful. He recommended disassembling the pump before I ordered parts, since there are several options to discuss. He was familiar with the different Dodge 318 water pumps, and offered to help figure out exactly what parts would be needed to make the project work. Apparently there area a lot of variables with water pumps. It also sounded like it may be possible to shorten the post-1978 water pumps, but I will have to do more research on that. The really good news is that the parts will cost about $33.00, including the correct impeller.

Once I get my new engine in-hand (tomorrow), I'm going to get it running, check it out, then disassemble everything for the rebuild. The water pump will be one of the first things to be addressed. Once I have everything figured out I'll start a thread on the PWA site, where I'll have part numbers and contact information listed. My hope is that once I have the process figured out, you will be able to order a "Shortened 318 Kit" direct from the rebuilder.
