I think the 2 wire 6 volt unit works differently than the single wire 6 volt unit. Early Dodge 1/2 ton WCs (mine is a WC12) used a 2 wire gauge. The WWII Dodge website (link on this page) had a detailed discussion on the 2 wire gauge and sending unit. You can also search this website for a specific topic.
The 2 wire gauges come up on Ebay every so often. I bought a spare gauge set (except coolant temp gauge) at the May Aberdeen, MD rally this year.
