When I pulled the drum, corrosion had pushed the rubber cups off the cylinder. The pistons and the cylinder have grown together as one. Only one hose feeds the rear axle and the other brake is fine, so hose is good. I replaced it only 28 years ago so it is practically new. ;^)

This is on the rear axle, so I had noticed no deterioration in braking ability before the panic stop and no drag afterwards. But just walking past the passenger side tire, I could feel the heat. The drum had not become red yet, but I could not hold my hand on the wheel.

Now I am thinking I had better check to see if the wheel bearing grease got cooked.

Now that I look at the VPW site again I see that I misread the information. The shoes are bonded AND riveted.
