It just sounds like you're living in the wrong place. Obviously your neighbors like all this foolishness because if they didn't, they'd unelect the politicians responsible for it. You're clearly in the minority and they're not going to change any time soon. The challenge here is to keep your neighbors from moving to North Idaho and then demanding to be serviced (yeah, think "stud service") by the government like they were back home.
