I recently had a similar situation....but as the buyer. I made a spur of the moment decision on an ebay auction without fully reading the description. Unfortunately I was the successful bidder on something that was of no use to me. It was an inexpensive purchase, with the shipping actually fifty cents more than the item itself. I contacted the seller requesting he allow me to send him the cost of the item only and he keep the item to sell another day. It was the honorable...and legal...thing to do. My ignorance should not be the sellers burden.

In your case; how much cheaper could he have gotten it, if telling the truth, and didn't he think that someday he may just need another roll of solder?....Hold him to it! You're not being petty...he is.
