Back in January 1970 I bought a new 640 Nordic wide track Ski Doo. I got it back home to the farm, and of course -- time to take it for a little run. It worked great at slow and moderate speeds but would cough and choke and cut out on high speed. A few days later I went back to where I had bought the machine to question them about the issue. The guy said we must have forgot to fix that issue on that one. It's really quite simple you will be able to do this yourself, rater than to truck it back 35 miles to them.
He explained, they are a two line gas hose system, the supply suction line and the return line. They are transparent hoses from the carb to the top of the tank. From the top of the tank the two metal tubes went side by side right to the bottom of the tank. So what was happening on high speed the return line was blowing air bubbles against the bottom of the tank right beside the suction line. Of course the suction line was then drawing a mixture of fuel and air back up to the carb. Not what you want for high speed operation.
The simple solution was to remove the metal tube section from the tank and cut the return tube off short, to make it blow back on to the top of the fuel in the tank.
I went back home and cut the return tube off as instructed. After that simple little operation it worked great. Talk about poor engineering. How is the regular Joe or John suppose to even suspect this?
