I appreciate all the info. This is for a small hydro system where it will be charging a battery, direct drive from the Pelton wheel to the alternator. My water system is good for 10 gpm at 70 psi, which works out to 300 watts. 70 psi gives 1800 RPM with the wheel diameter I have. With a Pelton wheel you're locked into a certain speed based solely on how much pressure you have at the nozzle, and the diameter of the wheel. Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't get the whole thing built and spinning and then find out the alternator only puts out 10 amps at that relatively slow speed. I'm pretty sure the speed/power curves I've seen for other alternators peak at 4000 rpm or so. Other modern generators are more efficient, but this is what I have. If it really puts out 300 watts it'll beat $1000 worth of solar panels, and will do it day and night even in bad weather.
