I had an NP420 out of the truck recently with the PTO covers off for a general clean-up, and the big gear that the PTO gear meshes with appeared equidistant from each side. I suspect you would have to reverse the gears on the lower shaft of the PTO to make it mesh. The PTO appears to be well-designed so that you can re-arrange its innards in a variety of different ways depending on your application.

If nothing else, I recommend trying it. If you already have the PTO, you'll probably want to overhaul it (just replace seals and any bad bearings) anyway, at which time you can see how reversible the shafts and shifter are. It's trivial to take the passenger side PTO cover off the tranny. Then get under there with the PTO in hand and see if it all looks likely, keeping in mind that you can reverse various parts of the PTO. The PTOs may have been sold with various model numbers, with the only difference being how the parts were assembled, rather than what parts were used.
