Practice, practice, practice. Get some scrap sheet metal from a junkyard, newer metal seems easier to weld on. You want to be skilled at what you need to work on. Practice all types of joints, Butt welds,lap joints, corners, etc. Use short tack welds to secure the joint, widely spaced at first. Skip around to disperse the heat. Then fill in the space between tacks, never more than one inch in length. Practice as much as you can. Wire and gas are still cheaper than your precious beast of burden.
