There are ways to make a front Dana 44 stronger, like stronger U-joints, stonger axle shafts, etc. But by the time you spend that kind of money you could practically have a Dana 60 from Boyce. Their stuff is take-off from CUCV military trucks, totally rebuilt. Their front 60s used to be about $1700. I got a 14 bolt from them with 4.88s and a Detroit and am happy with it.
Incidentally, if you have an automatic, you can use the front half of your NP203 with an adapter from Offroad Designs (www.offroaddesigns.com) with a married NP205 to get decent low range gearing (40-50:1 with an auto, ~100:1 with 4 spd).
But first I recommend start looking for a front 60. Even if it needs work, it sounds like the 44 needs work too.
