Hi Dave. The carbon build up on the valves is very common on all types of engines. That is normall, I know it looks bad but that is what happens in normall daily operation of any engine. They have cemicals to put in the gas tank an even special machines to hook up to the engines to help clean the valves off.It is even worse in todays engines. I am a auto mechanic an we see this problem alot. If you have the valves out a good cleaning on the wire wheel will do.Just so the seat is clean that is what seals the valve when shut. When I had the head off of my Command Car to replace the head gasket i found the same problem, Cleaned it off as best as I could.Good luck with your project. Bill
