That sounds totally plausable because it happened in the middle of the winter and there was some grody looking fluid that came out of the bottom.
It sure lookes like the master had been rebuilt once and even the slave cylinder boot looks new. Maybe someone rebuilt both and didn't replace the line as you suggest.
There is even an extra master cylinder in the cab so you could be right !!!
Problem is --- you know where that slave is located !!!
