I think these guys are missing what you are asking about, correct me if I'm wrong. I beleive you are asking if a clutch fan with a fixed slippage is better or worse than a clutch fan with a bimetalic spring on the front that only starts to lock up when a specified temp is reached? I would think if your cooling system is up to snuff, either would be fine. Concerning the noise however, I would beleive a thermal unit would work better on a vehicle with low gears. Higher cruising RPM would result in more noise from a fixed slip than from a variable or thermal slip. The thermal unit will only be engaged when the temp is high enough, versus the fixed slippage units speed is dictated by RPM. Just my opinion.
