The original rivets were not hardened but they might have "work hardned" some when they were set. This leads me to a question I've always wondered about. We had work trucks that were used off road with heavy loads and on hilly land. We often had the rivets shear on spring hangers and frame mounts. We would just drill them out and put the next size bigger bolt(usually grade 2) and go on. We had more of the rivets break but I never had to replace one of the bolts. Do any of you engineers out there know would a 3/8 rivet be equal to the strength of a 7/16 grade 2 bolt? We abused these trucks a lot as frame breaks and leaf srings breaks were common. Any thoughts out there? Kevin
