Has anyone ever removed the reinforcement frame channel from within the main frame rails on a flatfender Power Wagon? I would think that this is a prime place for moisture and dirt to collect and cause rust. In some climates and with some applications, I would think that there could be quite a lot of rust in between the two layers, especially around the rivets.
I'm not concerned about mine, since it has spent all of its life in a dry west Texas climate. However, I'm curious about whether or not this has been a problem for anyone else, in other areas of the country.
If a person were to remove and then reinstall the reinforcement channel, what would you use to replace the rivets? My first thought would be to use Grade 8 bolts, but those might be TOO brittle. Frame components should probably have a certain amount of flexibility. Grade 5 seems a bit weak, though. Are there any commercial outfits that can rivet the two rails back together?
By the way, before you ask...NO, I have no plans to do this to my truck. I'm just curious, as always, and always wanting to learn. I've always wondered what I would do if I ended up with a PW that I suspect might have a problem in this area.
