Tim,
I don't know what type of attachment you are using on the end of your slide hammer, I have had had good luck with a hook on seals, but not with removing bushings because of the force not being applied equel on each side.
When I bought my slide hammer from Snap-On years ago, I also purchased an accessory package that included attachments for removing various sized bushings. I have also made bushing pullers for the sizes that the Snap-On pullers didn't fit. Check out one of the quality tool vendors and ask to see what they offer in bushing remover attachments, then decide to purchase one for your slide hammer or make your own. Some shop-made bushing pullers can be as simple as using the right size THICK washer ground flat on two sides with a nut welded to the center of the washer. You can size the washer by comparing it to your spindle bushing or a new bushing. Be sure to match the nut to your slide hammer thread. Slide the washer in behind the bushing, turn it so the nut is facing you, and thread your slide hammer on to the nut. With a little practice it can be done. The swivel factory type is easier to use. If your truck has experienced a broken axle at some time, be sure that metal in the housing has not been distorted over the edge of the bushing which will make removal difficult. If you are using a good puller attachment, it might be a matter of increasing the weight of the slide to give the puller a sharper blow.Good luck!
