I spent forty - two years in the commercial HVAC Refrigeration trade. Early on, when soda fountains were around, much of the equipment was water cooled using small cooling towers. To clean scale from the tower and condenser tubes it was common practice to hit up the owner for a couple gallons of Coke syrup and dump it in the cooling tower and let it circulate for a day or two. Seemed to work as well as the commercially available stuff
