Did you see the truck? There aren't any wipers. There's barely a windshield. Inner and outer frames are rusted to pieces, held together with baling wire. Idles good and slow and idle mixture screw does something, so I assume no vacuum leaks. Cranking rhythm isn't the best, but I would think a leaky valve could do that. I can turn the engine all the way around just by pulling on the fan, which I can't do with a really tight engine, but no one cylinder feels like it has no resistance at all. Sometimes it backfires on startup, but does not backfire going downhill under compression like most engines with leaky valves do. I think setting the tappets would do it some good, maybe after it's had a chance for the backyard valve grind to settle in a bit, but beyond that it will be what it is for its current purpose. I deliberately didn't put my best straight-military 230 into this beater rig. If I put 1000 miles on the truck in the entire rest of my life, I'll be amazed. I probably won't even drive it into town ever again unless I'm out there with some other rig that breaks down.
