...but I flat-towed an M37 400 miles using a 1/2 ton Chevy pickup, and flat-towed two M35s using another M35 to tow them. I think flat-towing is safe if and only if, you go only in perfect weather (roads guaranteed to be bone dry the whole way), go on back roads as much as possible, and other roads at night so as not to hold up traffic, go down hill and around curves very slowly, and put enough weight in the tow vehicle that it out-weighs what you're towing. It's definitely a case of "go slow and get there quicker". And, obviously, use a tow bar rather than a rope or chain, add a safety chain in case the tow bar or hitch breaks, and tie the steering wheel of the towed vehicle loosely in a forward position so it doesn't suddenly spin all the way over if you take a turn too sharp or hit a chuck hole wrong.

Other than flat-towing it with whatever heavy-ish rig you have, your only alternatives are to stop even looking at rigs that are a long way away, or hire someone to haul it. Renting a good truck and trailer to do the haul yourself will end up costing almost as much as hiring it done, plus you're out your time and stress. The bottom line is cheap "parts trucks" aren't usually worth hauling any long distance unless you have the means of doing it yourself with equipment you already have.
