I have been wanting to install a trans temp gauge for a while, finally got around to it this weekend. I found a new windshield pillar cover with a single gauge pod molded into it. A genuaine Mopar part. I guess some model of a Dodge Ram had a gauge there at some point. I picked up an Autometer gauge, which is a pretty close match to the factory gauges. I asked at my local Dodge dealer about where the sending unit should go and they had no clue. I did some research online, and there was no clean way to tap in anywhere. I asked Hemimech from this Forum and he confirmed that, and suggested welding a bung into the side of the pan. So, I dropped the pan, all the while wondering why they dont put drain plugs on transmission pans. It probably saves about seventy five cents per truck not having one. Heck, I would have gladly paid that extra when I bought the truck!
I replaced the filters and seal while I had it apart, and got a tranny fluid change out of the deal. Changed the engine oil while I was at it.
I didnt do a lot of driving today, but it was interesting to keep an eye on it.
I mostly want the gauge to keep an eye o the temp when I am towing a trailer, which is pretty frequently.
Tim
