Brake lights are the bright filament on a two filament (usually an 1157 bulb) bulb. The bright filament is also the turn signal filament.

Your turn signal switch plays a role in this when it is turned on in one direction or the other to prevent a backfeed from one rear light to another. This is how you can have your foot on the brake pedal, but one light is solid on, the other is blinking.

If you have separate bulbs dedicate only for brake lights, ignore the caution above.
