Yes, indeed. 5 mA is what I told him. His nervous system wasn't calibrated to that degree of accuracy, but when we tried loading it down with resistors that drew a lot more than that, it still didn't trip. Hard to say how much current was going through my friend's body but it's safe to say it was past the level that was good for him.

The standard rule for working on high voltage equipment is always keep one hand in your pocket. It's one thing to burn one hand touching something hot, and quite another to have the current go from your left hand to your right, since in that case, it goes right past your heart along the way.

And then there was the old electrician at the Omak Lumber Co who didn't bother carrying a meter around with him. All he needed to know was whether a given circuit had 120, 240, or 660 volts on it. He'd check that by touching two fingers to the terminals (on the same hand, so no risk of heart failure) and seeing how it felt.
