I had a friend once who was handy at fixing things, but was a bit puzzled by a GFI (ground fault interrupter). It's the gizmo they put on bathroom outlets these days to make it harder to electrocute yourself if you try blow-drying your hair while taking a shower. He asked me what current it should take to trip the thing. He said he'd stuck a wire in the hot side of the outlet, got a good grip on it, and grabbed hold of a water pipe with the other hand and it just kept on shocking him and wouldn't trip off. He said it was giving him a pretty hard shock, non-stop, and he was wondering if it should have tripped by then. I had to tell him that yes, he had a defective GFI, and the little "test" button on the front of it would have given him the same information with less pain and less risk of ventricular fibrillation.
