Used to be illegal (in lots of places) to have "other" lights displayed at the front of the vehicle, unless it was a special (police, fire, etc) vehicle. Still is for the rear end of the vehicle. Parkers were also sometimes switched from outside - like tail-lights - and some so you would only display the light on the traffic side. Used to be if you were parked on a street without street lighting you had to display a light.
