Impact wrench - detent pin vs. hog ring

I was looking at impact wrenches that describe two types of anvils - detent pin, and hog ring.

I guessing that the one I have now, has a little ball on the anvil to keep the socket in place, but how does the hog ring work? I haven't seen one up close.

I have also seen it called a friction ring.
