He paid $4,000. Was it realistically worth that much? What engine is in it? How many miles are on the truck. How much will it cost you to rebuild the engine if it needs it? There's really not much financial room between $3,600 and what it will cost to have a V-8 completely rebuilt, and then, you will still have an old (you didn't say what year) truck. Who knows what other problems may be lurking.
Doesn't hurt to open the engine up to see what damage you have, but be careful you're not starting down the garden path.
