Finally a parent who sees the advantages of 2 wheels over 4 for kids and off road. The xr will be fine. It will run forever although he'll grow out of that and any thing else he owns long before it wears out. Except for shoes, they seem to destroy those. Keep him on two wheels until he's 55 years old. He can get a quad for his ranch when the time comes for chores. Leave the recreational (fast) riding for two wheels. And get him proper gear and be strict about wearing every thing all the time. Knees elbow chest shoulder protection besides helmet goggles boots. Plus pants jersey gloves. Maybe a neck brace when he starts going fast. Its the best way too learn wrenching.
