never tried the water trick but have heard of it. I pull the head and clean it well. it always needs it by he time I pull it. approx. 20k. this was standard practice expecialy in taxis and fleet vehicles. I used to own a walnut blaster that was set up for blasting carbon out with the head still on using special attachments. it was not working and I never tried to get it operational. The mechanic that gave it to me used it for years in the 40s nad 50s when there was lots of flatheads still on the road. flatehads do not compress and burn as efficiently as overhead valve engines so you get carbon build up at a much faster rate. If this was never done back in the day there would not have been any taxis on the road that could have made money. the extremely high mileage/long hours taxis get made it the only cost effective way to service the engines. if you dont do it you will start burning oil quite a bit at around 50 to 60 K. the carbon ruins the rings, and valves causes power loss too.
