Jacobs engine brakes or "Jake brakes" are not service brakes they are considered auxiliary braking meaning they merely slow down the vehicle lessening the wear and chances of overheating the regular service brakes. Pinion mounted brakes are not DOT legal in the U.S. as a service brake, but they can be used as a parking brake in some applications.
