DBs, I find myself in agreement with you. let me start by saying that I learned a great deal of what I know about flatties in the early sixtys, from my father who aquired his knowledge of flatties in the fields of france under some pretty trying conditions. (he was also an electrition) the only reason that we have trouble with starting with a points system is the current requirments of the system. electroinic systems do not require much current to produce a really good hot spark. the points system on the other hand needs a good supply of current to do the same, and therein lies the problem, the starters on our trucks take a goodly amount of current to crank the engine, and thereby starving the ignition to the point of not making a good hot spark, add compression and no spark!!!! my father owned a 46 dodge car that NEVER failed to start, 6volt, 230 flattie.(I've seen it start and go at 17below like it did at 50) he took a 8 volt battery and ran it to the starter to crank with and had the six volt battery for the ignition only. the six volt battery not having to crank the motor had Plenty of power to make a strong spark at the plug. I disremember how he seperatated the two but he did it, and managed to keep both charged by the car!!! So the point is, that there is not much if any, advantage to having a electronic ingnition, provided that your system is in good working condition. if you sluff your maintince, you WILL have trouble with your truck!! BTW I would love to have my mechcanical fuel pump back, but my exaust manifold precludes it right now. Dave.
