Harbor Freight warning

Those of you who will never buy from HF can skip this, but for those who do occasionally get some gloves or batteries there or who buy some cheap tools to leave at the cabin or in the truck box so you won't be out much if someone steals them, be advised that they've changed their warranty policy.

It used to be that the one consolation of Harbor Freight was that if the tools broke, they'd give you your money back or give you a replacement with zero to minimal hassle. They even advertised their no-hassle warranty. I went in yesterday to get an exchange for a multimeter that died due to overheating as a result of being left out in the sun -- not enclosed in anything, just sitting out in the sun -- and the "assistant manager" told me that henceforth there are to be no refunds or exchanges without a receipt. He says is prominently posted on the cash registers now, the reason being they have to know how much I paid for it (which is BS if I'm exchanging it for the identical sku). I argued that if it was sold with a "no-hassle" warranty, that should still be honored, but he insisted the new rules came down from corporate and there's no leeway any more.

So, from now on, if you buy from Harbor Freight, either save all your receipts or assume there's no warranty and if it breaks, you junk it and you're out the money even if you just bought it yesterday and the guy at the store remembers you.

With all the Dollar Store junk they're packing the shelves with these days, and with their "sales" on the same items week after week forever, and with their "20% off" coupons now excluding everything expensive (I guess I could still get 20% off on solar LED plastic butterflies for my yard), I predict they'll go the way of Liquidation World before long. I hope they do, after the way the yuppie son threw his old man out of the family business that the old man built up and was kind enough to give the son control of.

There are lots of big tool discounters on ebay these days. If I want another set of wrenches and screwdrivers to leave in a truck, that's where I'll be getting them. No meaningful warranty there either, but it's cheaper and more convenient.
