leave the doors on . Tack the doors to the body just below where you plan on cutting the top .
On the front window posts you need to put in a tube , ditto on the door jam you need to do a backer piece . Rosett weld above and below the cut .
Butt weld everything together , jump around a lot .
If possible use a big welder , I have done a few of these over the years and on most no filler was needed .
There are some regulations on replacing tops in the body shop world - the old regs required that the tubes go in the posts , not sure what the new regulations call for - some of the new steel does not take to welding - creates structural issues .
Go get last months street rodder - they are doing a one inch chop on a 40 ford - you will see everything you need to know .
