The concave side goes in that way when you "flatten" it out the edges expand to tightly grip the sides of the hole. In the old days in shops we also used a shellac type of gasket sealer along the edges , just for good measure. But, if the surfaces are scraped clean you will have no trouble. Maybe it's just something you develope a feel for but I just place them in the hole and smack them a couple of medium hits with a ball peen hammer. You will get a feel for when they are tight. Simple deal to do, just go for it, you cant do it wrong, unless you dont smack them hard enough. Have no fear these things were designed for farmers to fix. No offence meant.
