Ok, flushed the block with 4 gals of water and then used my magnet tool to pull a bunch of slag out from the water distribution area of the block. Now it is much cleaner, almost ready to put the new water pump on.

Here is a pic of the tool. Just epoxied two Radio Shack magnet to a length of steel. This shot is before I used it.
