I have Hughes too, and it is "o.k." in that it is an improvement over dial up for us in rural areas.
Problems with satellite internet are mainly: you have to have a clear view of the southern sky at a rather low angle. Second, the dish must be accessible if snow is plentiful as you have to keep it cleaned off to function.
What irks me about Hughes are three things:
Their advertising is very misleading, as they imply they are as fast as the high speed sources - definitely untrue.
Second, all the tech support is in India and sometimes it is very hard to understand the accents of the technicians there.
Finally, don't try and download a movie or large updates/files. They have a "penalty" system where if you do something like the above, your speed will be reduced to dial-up for 24 hours as a penalty to prevent your desire to do the download. So, if I have anything big to download, I have to do it at work. Again, their advertising does not "mention" this penalty set-up.
I would only go with Hughes if there was no alternative to dial-up.
A rural neighbor recently converted from Hughes to a new system offered by Verizon for people like us. My neighbors really like it - I am going to look into it. Not sure of the technology involved.
