I guess I take a different stance. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and the gentleman simply isn't interested in being mechanically inclined. I'm a programmer/database developer, and while I think it's something everyone should know, I realize that not everyone wants to work with technology at the level that I do. That doesn't mean they're dumb or smart, but just have different priorities than I do.
The reality is that it's always been this way. Throughout history there have been people who either don't care about mechanical things, or simply aren't mechanically inclined. Their strengths are in different areas. I've never quite figured out why people think that it's a new phenomenon-maybe they elected not to study history, and instead sharpened their mechanical skills.
