Some ptos mount on the transfer case. In this case, you use the gears in the transmission to drive the winch. So if you have a 4 speed transmission, you want all 4 gears to wind the cable in and reverse winds it out. Then the decision as to whether the cable winds over the top or under is dictated by the worm gear in the winch. Some winches are left winding and some are right winding. You can tell by turning the input shaft on the winch.
