Be sure to buy "High Speed Steel" taps, not hi carbon. The high carbon are the brittle ones. Hi speed is much tougher.
PITA as it is, I do run one through all the head bolt holes, every time. Make it nice and clean for a smooooth torquing. And anywhere else that isn't slick going in. Or you may never get it out.
