Had a very large brown bear (8-9') take down a cow moose just 30' off my front porch three weeks ago.

When I was out working in the yard that night the neighbor came over and told me about it. He and his buddy hazed the bear off the kill that afternoon by firing some shots over it and it finally left and swam across the Kenai River.

Up here, if an animal dies on your property you are responsible to get rid of it as fish and game will not haul it away. So getting rid of a 600-700 lb moose takes some equipment and strong boys. Luckily, the neighbor called our city and told them they felt the carcass created a public safety hazard due to the young kids we have in the neighborhood. The city came and winched the carcass out. The neighbor then poured about 10 gallons of Clorox over the remains that didn't get hauled out to hopefully prevent the bear from returning.

Scary thing about this: that morning around 5 am, I took our 7 mth old pup out to do her morning business. It seems likely that the bear was on the kill at that time. Thank goodness he didn't think we were a threat.

Five days ago, about one mile away a very large brown was seen in the middle of our town in a small patch of woods with another moose. The cops and wildlife troopers hazed him out of town. Probably the same bear.

Up here before you go outside you check your surroundings first because you never know what could be out there, plus I keep a shotgun and 10 mm Glock right by the door.
