Assuming you are working on the stock L134/T90 engine and trans combo and the stock Auburn, Rockford style pressure plate. Does the throwout bearing have the proper clearance from the pressure plate release levers? There should be a minimum of 1/16" gap between them.
Did you or previous mechanic mess with the pressure plate release gap? This gap (27/32) doesn't usually need to be adjusted but who knows what the other guy tried. Another issue I have run into is the bellhousing and block alignment may be off causing the noise. I have had to remove the bellhousing, index it to the crank, and drill/ream/dowel it for proper alignment since there were no alignment dowels from the factory.
