I do a fair bit of rock crawling with my Jeep. I too would recommend a solid U-joint for that use, or for truck pulling. The U-joint brand I use is CTM, they are rebuildable, very strong, but they are not cheap.
I found out the hard way after switching to the CTM joints that the next weak link was the shafts themselves.
