I count 11 leafs on the front springs of my '54 FFPW. It only has about 15,000 miles and I believe it is all original. It looks like yours.

My truck has the front-mounted winch and no evidence that it was worked hard or ever had additional equipment. There is about one inch of flex in the spring measured mid-point, which is more than your springs look to have. My front shackles look like they may have a little more forward angle than yours.

I put my 210 pounds on the end of the bumper and the springs showed no additional deflection. I doubt that the extra weight on your truck is causing any extra deflection, at least at rest. The extra dynamic load may, however, have flattened the springs.

Your winch is ugly. But, it shows the ingenuity and history associated with this truck. I say keep the winch. It's a lot easier and cheaper than restoring the truck.

If the truck drives O.K., I say don't worry about the springs. You're probably not going to be putting a bunch of miles on the truck anyway.
