Thanks for your comments. I was not aware of the spare tire winch, that may be the way to go. As far as the bar-carrier idea, I also experienced that problem. I no longer own that truck, but modified mine with a pipe sleeve with a dog-legged handle welded at the top of it. The sleeve protected the threads from rocks/debris, and the handle quickened the pace at which it could be unthreaded. It still caused me to sit on the ground with the tire/carrier being lifted up with legs acting like a scissors lift until I could get my threaded tube started. I just can't see doing that with one of these big bastards.

As far as putting it between the cab and the bed, I am concerned about the full sheet problem. After all the work of building a flatbed, I'd feel like an idiot everytime if I couldn't carry a full sheet without all the gates closed. And, getting it up between the cab and the bed does also present a problem, albeit slightly less than if it were under the bed.
